내용  SUMMARY
Optical cable consumption in 2017 is up 12% over 2016

• Although the world’s fibre-producing capacity has been increasing in 2017 but it has not kept pace with demand. As a result, the worldwide fibre shortage has continued through Q3 and is expected to last, pushing bare fibre prices to the highest levels seen since 2004.
• Major fibre makers are investing in new preform capacity. These investments will continue into 2018, but there are recent signs that demand will continue rising in China and other key markets, such as the US and Europe. If so, the shortage may last well into 2018, possibly stretching through all of it.
• The amount of optical cable installed worldwide in the first three quarters of 2017 totalled 359 million fibre-km, a 12% y-o-y increase. China’s consumption was 206 million fibre-km through to the end of Q3 2017, putting China at 57% of the world market. CRU’s market surveys show Chinese suppliers believe fibre and cable orders in H2 are stronger than in H1 2017. China’s full-year total could be 280 million fibre-km or more.
• In the US, on the other hand, demand rose quite sharply in the first half, but some cable manufacturers said orders in recent months were a little softer, suggesting H2 will not exceed H1.
• Considering the strength in China and in other key markets, world optical cable consumption appears likely to reach 480 million fibre-km, an 12% y-o-y increase over 2016. Earlier this year, the consensus among fibre and cable makers was that China Mobile’s optical cable demand in 2018 would be like its 2017 demand. In recent months, however, several market participants have suggested that CM’s 2018 demand will show further growth. There has been speculation that China Mobile might purchase 200 million F-km in 2018, 38% more than in 2017.
• The amount of bare fibre corresponding to the cable installations in Q1 through Q3 was 387 million fibre-km. If 2017 cable installations total 480 million fibre-km, the amount of bare fibre needed to support this level will be 516 million fibre-km.
