내용  SUMMARY
 World 2017 cable demand : 493 M F-km, 58% in China

• In 2017, global optical cable consumption increased 14.9% from 429 million
fibre-km to 493 million fibre-km. China’s consumption increased 17.4% to 286
million fibre-km, which was 58% of the global total. Other high-growth markets
include the US, with a year-on-year increase of 16.5%, and the “big-5” group
(Fr., Ger., Italy, Spain, and the UK) of W. Europe, with a 15.8% increase.
• The amount of bare fibre shipped to achieve this level of cable production was
533 million fibre-km in 2017, up from 464 million in 2016. To meet this level of
fibre production, the world’s preform capacity was fully utilized. In other words,
new preform capacity that came on-line in 2017 was not enough to keep up with
demand, and the fibre shortage continued all year.
• In 2017, fibre factories in China produced 347 million fibre-km, representing
65% of the world’s fibre shipments. More than half this fibre is made using imported
preforms or cylinders. Several top-tier Chinese fibre makers have preform projects
underway, with new capacity expected to enter production this year. Expansion
projects in the US, Japan, and Europe also will begin production this year or in 2019.
Despite these investments, the fibre shortage has persisted in the early months of
2018 and is likely to last through most or all of the year.
• This Monitor’s sum of 493 million fibre-km for world cable demand in 2017 is
12 million fibre-km greater than CRU’s assessment in the latter weeks of 2017
and reported in the January issue of this report. The key factor in the increased
view of 2017 demand has been new information on optical cable consumption
in China – specifically in CATV network projects. China’s CATV industry used 40
million fibre-km in 2017, up from about 10 million in 2016. This level of growth
was not foreseen at the outset of 2017, and it proved to be a factor in China’s
on-going fibre shortage. Several industry participants, however, have said that
this growth will not continue and that CATV industry demand is not expected
to remain at this level in China.
