내용  SUMMARY
 World fibre shipments totalled 239 M f-km in H1

• The amount of bare fibre produced worldwide in H1 2018 was 293 million fiber-km.
This sum represents a 13% increase over that of H1 2017. Further, it suggests that the full-year
2018 total could approach 600 million fibre-km, a level that is more than twice the world's
 production total five years earlier.
• A total of 600 million fibre-km is possible because new preform capacity is coming on-line the year.
The additional capacity has the potential to push the world's capacity above 625 millon fibre-km in 2018.
This also means that the world's two-year-old fibre shortage will end this year. Comments from fibre and
cable manufacturers confirm that the shortage has abated in Q2 and that bare fibre prices have begun
decreasing in China and other key markets.
• As noted in the last two editions of this Monitor, China's optical cable consumption in early 2018 was
a little lower than expected. The main reason is that China Mobile's monthly orders were below the level
indicated in its tender for the first half of 2018. Plus, much of the new preform capacity entering service
this year is in China. Thus, China was a major factor in the world fibre shortage, and it also is provign a key
factor in the shift back to balanced or potentially excess capacity.
• Othe fibre and cable markets are progressing well as expected. The US market was a little slower in Q4 2017
and the early months of 2018, but orders appear to have picked up in Q2, and the US is likely to have
near-term growth of up to 10% per year through a wide swath of application sectors. Other regions also are
showing steady growth trends, driven by FTTH, new backbones, data centres, and other applications.
