내용 S-M fibre prices likely to
keep falling through H2

With Q3 2018 nearly complete, the quarterly rate of optical fibre shipments is in a range of
149 million fibre-km per quarter. This is 11% higher than the average quarterly rate in 2017.
CRU estimates that the world’s total preform capacity will have increased 19% from 544
million in 2017 to 649 million in 2018. If 2018 quarterly shipments of bare fibre average 149
million fibre-km for the year, then the full-year shipments will be 596 million fibre-km. This
means preform capacity for the year will be 9% higher than fibre shipments.
As a result, we see the fibre industry shifting from a shortfall of preform capacity in 2017 to
an excess of preform capacity in 2018. The shift has become more pronounced as 2018 has
progressed. In other words, there is more excess capacity in the latter months of the year.
The reason is that several major suppliers have been bringing up further new preform
capacity as the year progresses.
The upshot is an end to the fibre shortage and a downward trend in fibre prices. This is a
major development in the optical cable market in recent months. There is less pressure for
cable makers to lockup fibre supply in long-term contracts. The excess capacity in some
markets, such as China, is also putting pressure on some fibre makers to get more
aggressive in export markets.
